I scream! You scream! We all scream for ice cream! It’s true. While we know it is probably more cost effective to go into the local grocery store and buy a half gallon, it doesn’t taste the same. We’re serious. There’s something about going out for ice cream that makes it taste better. Here’s our updated guide to Rochester NY Ice Cream. Today we’re focusing on some of our favorite local shops. We’d love to hear yours!
Now, some will say that ice cream isn’t healthy, but research says there are some benefits. ( I have also taken the liberty to add a few)
5 Reasons to Eat Ice Cream Today
- Despite the cream and sugar, it has other good stuff like calcium, potassium and vitamin B.
- It might even help you lose weight!
- July is National Ice Cream Month and July 20th is National Ice Cream Day. It’s good to support some of these other national holidays. ( June is Fight the Filthy Fly month which is another reason why you need ice cream to keep up your strength.)
- You haven’t really had a good season, until the coach takes you out for ice cream.
- When you buy ice cream at your local ice cream shop you are supporting small business!

Hedonist Artisan Ice Cream:
What is Artisan Ice Cream? I’m glad you asked. Here’s an explanation from the website:
We make our ice cream and sorbet onsite at our shop in the South Wedge. We start with locally produced, high butterfat cream from Pittsford Farms Dairy, and then add the best ingredients we can find. We source ingredients from other local producers as much as possible, using coffee from Coffee Connection, fruit from Hurd Orchards, cheese from Lively Run Goat Dairy and honey from Doan’s Honey Farm. We balance these ingredients in each recipe for maximum flavor to create the best ice cream you have ever tasted. We also make all of our toppings, waffle cones and sauces from scratch.
They have a staple of 8 classic flavors, but if you’re feeling adventurous, there’s Goat Cheese Whiskey Fig.
Visit them at 672 South Avenue
Rochester, NY 14620
Open 10am-9pm Sunday-Thursday
Just on the border of the city in East Irondequoit, Nestins is well loved! Read one of their facebook reviews to see why:
“I love this ice cream shop!! I love that it is local, and the prices are reasonable-and I buy the Lancer Lacrosse coupon book and that lasts me all summer, it is fabulous. But one of the things that really keeps me coming back is how polite the kids that are employed there are! I look forward to their opening every year.” The good new is they’re open now. Coupon books are limited so get there soon!
The Ginger Lion
Brand new to the ice cream scene, they had a rough start last year but they are well on their way with plenty of North Winton Village support. Be sure to watch their Facebook page to find out when the next batch of homemade waffle cones is fresh off the press!
Abbott’s Frozen Custard on Lake Avenue
I know you can get Abbott’s in several locations, but it won’t taste the same as it does at the beach! Maybe it’s the ocean breeze? Okay, the lake breeze? They also have taken the show on the road with their own food truck. Be sure to follow them on Facebook to see what the flavors are and where the truck will be!
