Three cheers for summer! We know that many of you are headed out of town this summer, for a well-deserved vacation! This week we thought we’d do a little throw-back, and update our post on keeping your home safe while you’re away info we shared last year. Take a look at some of the great ways you can keep your home secure while you are out of town:
Be aware of what you say & show on your social media. That picture of the whole family camping might be really neat, but it also broadcasts that you are away from home. Consider adjusting your privacy settings on Facebook, Twitter & Instagram while you’re away; make sure only people you trust can see what you’re up to. To be even safer, consider delaying posting about your vacation until you’re back home… put together a great photo collage of your trip, and share a bunch of pictures at once!
Notify the Right People
If you’re going to be gone for an extended period of time, it would be good to let some people in the neighborhood know. If you’re friendly with the neighbors, mention your upcoming vacation to them, and make sure they have your number in case they see anything suspicious. It’s also a good idea to give a trusted family member or friend a spare key, just in case.
You can also notify the Rochester Police Department, but please call their non-emergency number to let them know you will be away.
Insider Tips & Tricks
Don’t leave those lights blazing while you’re gone!! Sure, lights on may be a signal that someone is home… but leaving a single one on for a long period of time could just send the opposite signal! Instead, invest in a timer switch or two, and have short bursts of time when your lights are on.
Nothing screams “we’re on vacation” like an overflowing mailbox or a pile of newspapers on the porch! Be sure to stop all deliveries, or find someone you trust to collect things for you!! And if you’re going to be gone for a long stretch, you might consider having someone mow your lawn for you.
